Elden Ring – Shadow of the Erdtree trailer analysis

For essentially an entire year, Shadow of the Erdtree has been nothing but a single image, but now we finally have a whole trailer to dissect and they packed quite a lot into only a couple minutes. Let’s see what we can find if we start pulling at the threads.

Something that was sort of a big reveal, but probably should've felt obvious in retrospect was that not everything George R.R. Martin wrote was used for the main game. Messmer has apparently been secretly hidden in the backstory this entire time, and only now do we have any perspective to see where they hinted at him. This means, no matter how thoroughly we examine the game, we can never be certain we have the full story. It also raises the question of just how much else there is still waiting in the wings, and what more they might be able to do with it.

3:14 looks like Godfrey to me ngl

the skeletal horse beast man seems to be an imagining of the Nuckelavee in some way, a mashing of horse and man without skin.

The strange skeletal creature moulded to the horse that's either emerging from, or sinking into the mud, is likely a reference to a celtic mythical creature, the Nuckelavee

I am just so glad that it isn't another time travel DLC like many predicted. I like stories to move forward.

I need a voice for the videos, I know you are a dude but this is so boring and disconnected.

The guy pulling the horn out of his body had the same buckle for his robe as the guy from the painting who you said had the same symbol as something of goddricks or somone?

Interesting, Who will be main boss of the DLC. It's not Messmer. I think it will be Mikella.

At 4:55 we see the little, golden and burning tree-like object in the left hand of that creature.
The same object, just larger, is the poor old man trying to pull out of his body. (6:34)

Maybe a Miquella thing. As he compelled that man to worship him by making this tree thingy grow inside of him.

Miquella as a guide would be cool, but I kinda want Melina to get more screen time and character development.

So they say hes a traitor… and he has fire going for him… maybe he also has something to do with the fire giants?

Conspiracy theory: miquella is actually evil

At 5:14 (1:52 in the trailer) the player character appears to be casting a new gravity spell, only they are using a seal and not a stave to cast it indicating it is a gravity incantation, which I found interesting. It also has a butterfly effect so it may be of a different origin from the gravity magic of the Onyx Lords and Astels

Is that not Melina standing in the beginning shot? and if so doesn't that mean the only canonical ending that makes sense be the frenzied flame ending where she wasn't sacrificed?

Thank you for this video. I don't need to watch ~40 minutes hit or miss Vaati's essay now…

So I thought the enemy @2:55 was a leech originally but looking closer it resembles a hagfish or lamprey with arms. Godwyn has a marine theme so they could be related like the basilisks and crabs.

I noticed the lady in the painting who looks like a deathbed companion has the same braids in her hair as ranni has. Or more accurately, her snow witch teacher whose armor ranni wears. It's possible the lady in the painting is ranni's magic teacher. Although she was supposed to be a secret so idk

Has anyone noticed that when Miquella gesturing towards the shadowed erdtree, we dont actually see the "veil" covering the tree in all the other shots? Maybe it could be framing or perspective, but id wager that whatever miquella is doing in the shadow realm must revolve around this tree and the "veil" somehow. Id also like to point out that in that very shot, the skybox around the tree seems to be alot brighter than the rest of the tralier due to Miquella's spell of sorts.

Can you imagine if you could film a documentary with of George r r Martin sitting through a playthrough with zuli or vaatividya, having them explore the world and showing him the environmental story telling and seeing if anything comes to mind or just seeing his reaction to recognizing things he wrote.
It would be alot like an ancient Roman going to the future and exploring the a post apocalyptic world and would be the coolest gaming related video ever lol

It could be pure coincidence, but there's a lot of overlap between Messmer and biblical depictions of Lucifer.

1. Lucifer came to Eve in the Garden of Eden as a serpent.
2. Some artistic depictions include the serpent being winged due to God cursing serpents to "wriggle on their bellies in the dust", implying they used to not be like that.
3. The snakes were called traitors to the Erdtree, not enemies, and Lucifer was an angel before rising against God.
4. He wields a black, shadowy fire that bring to mind visions of hell. I think this would be very weak evidence alone, but;
5. If we were to run with that hellfire concept, at 4:22 you see him throw hellfire at the player, who then immediately flies into the air with golden, angelic-looking wings. The juxtaposition of the two, especially if the wings are probably a Golden Order miracle, does lend credence to the idea. Though it does also look similar to the wings of the crucible knights?

Like I said, it could very well not be really indicative of the writers' (including GRRM) intentions, but there's enough similarity to make it interesting to look at it through that lens.

@ZullietheWitch yours are the only speechless videos I consume. Every other example is rather annoying, but, you've managed to break the mold. Love the content you supply.

I think it's worth noting that Messmer's winged spear looks like a cleaner, not deformed version of the branch-like weapons used to impale the fire giants, which are also usually seen across fire monk camps.

@ziomah8648

Crazy idea. The Cleanrot Knights/Valkyries get elements from the three siblings:
The impaling spears from Messmer.
The holy incantations and halos from Miquella.
The scarlet rot from Malenia.
Messmer being there since the beginning but being blanked out from history for his betrayal could also mirror the Nameless King in Dark Souls. Only surviving the mockery for the snakes in the colosseums and the symbolism for the Volcano Manor (special interest in Bernahl's backstory, weapon and set) like the statues for the Warriors of Sunlight.

I didn't really liked Elden Ring, compared to Dark Souls games. It seemed too large and empty, too repetitive.
I really hope that From will just recreate Dark Souls game within this ER DLC.
