The guy in LOZ is not Wart. That’s an entirely different character.
Super Mario Land 2 was actually supposed to be a game called Doki Doki Panic 2, but the first one was a flop. The USA was clamoring for a new Mario Bros game, and Japan felt Super Mario Land: The Lost Levels, would be too difficult for the USA, so they took Doki Doki Panic 2, changed playable characters and some monsters, and sent it to the USA as Super Mario Land 2.
We did get the Lost Levels later as part of Super Mario All Stars.

Where's the NES and All Stars evolutions? Granted yeah, they:re both SMB2 as the GameBoy Advance 1 is….. Which by the way everyone pretty much knows is mostly reskinned Doki Doki Panick in Japan, (With 1 exception being you're supposed to finish with all characters for completion) but I don't consider this a canon Super Mario Bros 2 at all, not even Lost Levels because it tells exactly the same story as Super Mario Bros but is just slightly difficulty modified. (Poison Mushroom, back level warps, differentiated height/slide between Mario and Luigi). I would honestly count Mario Bros number 1 and Super Mario Bros number 2 even though neither say 1 or 2 and they aren't "Super" until SMB, on order for 3 to call right where it is/should be. The rest ignore numbers except for 64 because it's promoting the console, same with Wii/WiiU…..
I didn’t expect Wart to appear in the new movie! Cool! I would like to think that Wart is a character who originated in Super Mario Bros. 2, so those cameos and what else in the other non-Mario appearances, like Zelda, are probably just men who look like him. I mean, Wart doesn’t do inter-dimensional traveling, right?
