God of War: Ragnarok — Frozen Flame Locations

Upgrading the Leviathan Axe in God of War: Ragnarok is key to taking on the progressively more difficult enemies the game throws at you. Even with the best armor in the game, having a leveled primary weapon becomes a requirement. To do so, you will need Frozen Flames, eight of which are scattered throughout the game.

This guide will provide you with all Frozen Flame locations in God of War: Ragnarok, including their exact spots on the map.

Frozen Flame Location #1

The very first Frozen Flame can be obtained in the Lower Wildwoods of Midgard, when you fight The Huntress mini-boss during the game’s opening hours.

This battle can’t be missed; it is a part of the prologue, “Surviving Fimbulwinter.” Once the boss is defeated, she will drop your first Frozen Flame.

Frozen Flame Location #2

The next Frozen Flame can be obtained during Chapter 4, “Groa’s Secret.” Here, you will travel to The Strond in Alfheim and defeat Alva, an Elven mini-boss. Once the battle is over, you will be rewarded with your second Frozen Flame.

Frozen Flame Location #3

For the game’s third Frozen Flame, you will need to travel to The Northern Wilds in Vanaheim. This will happen during Ragnarok‘s sixth story mission, “The Reckoning.” Here, you must face Nidhogg as a boss. Defeat them, and the upgrade item is yours.

Frozen Flame Location #4

It will take some time to get the fourth Frozen Flame in God of  War: Ragnarok; you will need to reach the 12th story mission, “Reunion.” Unlike many of the other Flame items (including Chaos Flames), this specific instance will automatically appear in your inventory during the chapter.

Frozen Flame Location #5

As with this region’s Chaos Flame, you must face a story boss to get this Frozen Flame. This time around, it is the Flame Phantom. You will come to The Burning Cliffs area of Muspelheim during Chapter 16, “The Summoning.”

Frozen Flame Location #6

Travel to The Crater in Vanaheim for the next Frozen Flame, and head to the Plains area, which becomes available during the Scent of Survival Favor. Here you must ride the paper boat to The Crater and chase after Helka.

Once you’ve reached the spot with the marker, you must defeat the Crimson, the Dread Dragon.

Frozen Flame Location #7

This Frozen Flame can be found in The Barrens of Alfheim, where you’ll need to fight three Berserker enemies. This area becomes available after you complete the Secrets of the Sands Favor, but the Berserkers won’t be available until later in the story. Return here later.

Once you reach the spot on the map, the fight will begin. Note that Berserkers will shoot a large number of arrows, so be very careful during this fight. Once it is over, you will be rewarded with the seventh Frozen Flame.

Frozen Flame Location #8

You will need to find all six Hel Tears for the final Frozen Flame. Each Hel Tear will reward players with a Frozen Spark. Once you have all six Frozen Sparks, you will get the Frozen Flame for the Leviathan Axe’s final upgrade. Note: you won’t be able to open Hel Tears immediately, so come for these after the story.

Hel Tear Location #1

This Hel Tear is part of the critical path and can’t be missed. You’ll encounter it during The Reunion story quest.

Hel Tear Location #2

You can get the next Hel Tear from the portal appearing between Helgrind and The Gleaming in Helheim.

Hel Tear Location #3

This Hel Tear is near the beginning of the Aurvangar Wetlands area, where you froze the geysers to make a path through the area earlier in the game.

Hel Tear Location #4

The next portal can be found in The Strond in Alfheim.

Hel Tear Location #5

If you go to the Veiled Passage in Vanaheim, you can see the fifth portal.

Hel Tear Location #6

The final portal with Hel Tear can be found on top of a cliff at the Lake of Nine in Midgard.
