God Of War Sons of Sparta’s Co-Op Mode Unlockable With Cheat Code, Sony Reveals

In case you missed it, there’s a new God of War game out in the form of God of War: Sons of Sparta, a 2D Metroidvania developed by Mega Cat Studios in conjunction with Sony’s Santa Monica Studio. It stars Kratos and Deimos during their formative years, and if the game’s name and its protagonists had you thinking it was a co-op game, you’d be mostly correct.

Keyword: Mostly.

That’s because the game is primarily a single-player adventure, and its co-op mode isn’t available until AFTER you beat the main story and is actually a separate “endgame roguelike challenge mode that gives you different enemies and reward pools each time you play.”

That part wasn’t made clear at launch, and it wasn’t until well after did things become clarified.

Now, following some backlash, in a new PlayStation Blog post, Sony has revealed that you can play “The Pit,” the name of the co-op mode WITHOUT having to beat the game once, via inputting a cheat code at the start screen.

“If you feel ready to test your skills earlier, you can input this sequence below in the starting menu to unlock it early,” the post reads.

Once that code has been entered, a new option on the menu to dive right into the mode will be made available.

It’s unclear what’s more shocking: Sony seemingly acknowledging backlash and doing something about it or seeing a cheat code play such a prominent role in the big 2026.

As mentioned up top, having the co-op mode be a separate challenge and unavailable from the start wasn’t something made clear during the game’s reveal trailer or its PlayStation Store page, leaving fans confused in the minutes and hours following its shadowdrop.

Fans, rightfully, began seeking out refunds for Sons of Sparta, citing feelings of being duped by the game’s advertisements, only to find out that co-op wasn’t available from the get-go or really even a focal part of the title.

For its part, Sons of Sparta stands as the lowest-rated God of War title by a long mile, currently sitting at 65 on Metacritic on 60 critic reviews and an even lower 6.0 from users on 701 ratings. Whether now having the co-op mode available at the start via a cheat code is enough to turn things around remains to be seen.
