Reacher has become one of the biggest names in action entertainment, but the character’s future is now firmly in the hands of a different writer. Between the hugely successful novels and Prime Video’s Reacher series starring Alan Ritchson, the former military policeman has become recognizable to audiences well beyond the original books. However, it all started with author Lee Child, who introduced Reacher in 1997’s Killing Floor and spent decades building one of the most successful thriller franchises in publishing.
The popularity of Reacher has only grown in recent years, especially with Alan Ritchson taking on the character. The television adaptation has introduced the franchise to an entirely new audience, while the novels continue to expand Reacher’s adventures. Of course, writing a long-running book series is a massive commitment, especially one that has been going for nearly 30 years. Lee Child began transitioning away from the series in 2020, when his younger brother Andrew Child joined him to write The Sentinel. Now, that transition has effectively reached its conclusion.
Reacher Loses Its Original Author, But It’s Not All Bad News
Lee Child has officially confirmed that he is no longer directly involved in writing new Reacher novels, with Andrew Child taking over the series. Speaking with Collider following the release of Chain Reaction, Lee explained that Andrew now handles the manuscripts independently. In fact, Lee doesn’t even read the new books until they’re submitted to the publisher. Although his name remains associated with the series, the original creator has largely handed over the actual writing process, allowing his brother to decide where Reacher’s stories go next. Lee explained:
“He’s very secret, and I think that’s fair enough. When I was doing it, I hated showing anybody anything, and I generally wouldn’t, because the style that I had and that Andrew’s continued is completely improvised. There’s no plan, there’s no long-term view. You can’t say, ‘This is what it’s going to be.’ We don’t know. It’ll be what it is, and until it’s finished, I don’t really know what it is or what it’s about. I don’t like to show anybody, and he’s the same. So I just get it when the publisher gets it, and I read it out of interest.”
Interestingly, Lee Child doesn’t view handing over Reacher as an especially unusual decision. In the same Collider interview, the author explained that allowing readers to make a character their own is part of the appeal of writing fiction. He compared Andrew taking over the books to other people interpreting Reacher through movies, television, and even fan fiction. Considering the character has already been portrayed by both Tom Cruise and Alan Ritchson, Lee sees another writer continuing the novels as a natural extension of that process. It’s certainly an interesting perspective, especially for an author who spent so much of his career developing the character.
It’s also worth clarifying that Lee Child isn’t completely walking away from Reacher. He remains associated with the franchise and continues discussing the character with Andrew, even if he no longer participates in writing the novels himself. Lee is also involved with the television side of Reacher, meaning his connection to the character extends beyond the books. Meanwhile, Andrew has gradually taken on more responsibility since The Sentinel, with Chain Reaction representing the latest chapter in the series under his direction. The transition has been years in the making, so this isn’t a sudden departure or an indication that the novels are ending.
As for what’s next, Reacher certainly isn’t going anywhere. Chain Reaction is available now, while Lee Child is also set to co-write Zero Margin, the first novel centered on Frances Neagley, alongside Yasmin Angoe. Season 5 is also expected before the end of 2027, so fans looking for more Reacher will no doubt have plenty in the coming months and years still.
