A new homebrew launcher called Playden has been adapted to run on jailbroken PlayStation 5 consoles, allowing users to load certain Steam games locally. The software is experimental, so while you can install a wide selection of Steam games, there is no guarantee that they will work, or run well.
Playden (via VideoCardz) uses prospero-win, a PS5 port of Wine, paired with DXVK for graphics translation, allowing certain Windows games to run directly on the console without booting into Linux. The launcher supports importing titles through USB or FTP, offers higher resolution and refresh rate output options, and can present Steam libraries with demos and beta branches included. It also handles its own runtime setup on first launch, reducing installation to a simple folder copy.
Demonstrations circulating online show users running older or less demanding games such as Portal, Half‑Life 2 and Fallout: New Vegas, which appear to be among the more reliable options on the modified firmware. However, there are limitations when trying to run newer, more demanding games, or anything that requires an additional launcher or kernel-level anti-cheat.
Many modern releases crash or fail to launch, and anything requiring kernel‑level anti‑cheat or external clients like the EA app is unsupported. The developer also warns that Steam sign‑in tokens are stored unencrypted on the console, and cloud saves should be backed up to avoid accidental overwrites.
KitGuru says: Running PC titles through Wine on PS5 hardware is an impressive technical achievement but isn’t exactly practical for most users.
