Cyberpunk 2077 has long since shaken away the hate surrounding its controversial release, and while the countless updates have certainly helped, the legendary spinoff of Cyberpunk Edgerunners breathed new life into the sci-fi RPG. On top of the second season for Cyberpunk 2077’s official anime adaptation, news has just broken that a live-action movie is now in development.
As reported in an exclusive interview with Deadline, Paramount has signed the rights for the project set in the Cyberpunk 2077 universe to create its own film produced by Lorzendo di Bonaventura, in partnership with the development team and current rights owners at CD Projekt Red.
Everything We Know About The Film So Far
Given that the film is only in the very early stages of development, we don’t know that many details about what the film will actually be about, other than Deadline specifies it is “a live-action film set in the Cyberpunk 2077 universe,” rather than directly saying that it would be adapting the events of the game’s story.
While there’s a chance it could just wind up being a straight adaptation of CD Projekt Red’s Cyberpunk 2077 itself, a growing number of gaming adaptations have been taking the route of telling new stories in their universes instead. Even Paramount’s own star-studded Street Fighter movie has opted for a more original storytelling approach, albeit borrowing the same characters and over-the-top action of its gaming inspirations.
One detail that might be cause for concern among fans, however, is the fact that the producer attached to the Cyberpunk 2077 movie, Lorzendo di Bonaventura, doesn’t have the best track record when it comes to highly-rated film releases. Despite several winners like Transformers One, The New Look, and Only The Brave under his belt, some fans have already expressed worry given the producer’s recent track record producing movies like Madame Web.
Cyberpunk 2077 Is Ripe With Storytelling Potential
While there are ultimately countless other factors and roles that go into the quality of a film besides its producer, the Cyberpunk 2077 property has no shortage of excellent opportunities for new storytelling, both within the confines of Night City and the greater world of the original tabletop RPG experience.
Although it would feel criminal not to get Keanu Reeves to make an appearance as Johnny Silverhand, there are still plenty of ways to incorporate familiar characters, factions, or themes of the series while still providing a fresh take with the upcoming Cyberpunk 2077 movie.
