Back in February, we reported on the fact that a group of hackers managed to get the PSP emulator PPSSPP running on the streaming-focused PlayStation Portal peripheral. Unfortunately, the hackers who discovered the exploit have now helped Sony patch it.
Back in February, Google employee Andy Nguyen revealed that they had managed to hack the remote-play device, saying at the time “After more than a month of hard work, PPSSPP is running natively on PlayStation Portal. Yes, we hacked it.”
The dev revealed at the time that there were no plans to release the exploit “in the near future”. This seems to have been somewhat of an understatement, as Nguyen has since revealed that “We responsibly reported the issues to PlayStation. Bugs are fixed on 2.06.”
The PlayStation Portal isn’t the first handheld to be hacked, with Sony’s original PSP and PS Vita being notorious for their exploits. As with the PS Portal however, many of the early discoveries were quickly patched at the time.
So while emulation is unlikely to come to the PS Portal any time soon, hopefully there will come a point when hackers are able to do their thing without Sony interfering.
