Sony may have quietly acquired the ‘Kena’ IP

Ember Lab have had a strong relationship with Sony, with the team’s debut title – 2021’s Kena: Bridge of Spirits – launching as a PlayStation console exclusive before eventually coming to Xbox and Nintendo Switch many years later. While it initially seemed as though a similar deal was in place for the team’s follow-up release, 2027’s Kena: Scars of Kosmora appears to now be a full-blown PlayStation IP.

As part of the console maker’s latest ad made in collaboration with K-Pop star LISA, Sony showed off footage from a number of first-party PlayStation titles including Marvel Tokon, Wolverine and God of War Laufey.

Among these was Ember Lab’s Kena: Scars of Kosmora. Though in and of itself nothing too crazy given that the upcoming game is a PlayStation console exclusive, the legal fine print included alongside its footage does not make any reference to Ember Lab.

Instead, Scars of Kosmora is listed as “a trademark of Sony Interactive Entertainment” – contrasting the game’s initial announcement trailer earlier this year where it was stated as being “property of Ember Lab LLC.”

Regardless, it is clear that Sony / PlayStation has a vested interest in Kena: Scars of Kosmora’s success. Assuming the game proves to be a hit when it arrives next year, we may very well see the console maker announce what would be a pretty appropriate acquisition.
