It is an essential part of the Mario experience: losing your lives and going Game Over. But even though it has been pretty much present in every Super Mario game, its existence is under serious threat. What has changed? How did we get to this point? And what does the future hold? Let’s find out!

I think that depressed Luigi is actually meant to look 'possessed' by the ghosts, or 'soulless' in a way.
My headcanon is that ghosts (like Boos) are people who leave Aftergame without an extra life. So they can choose to 'come back', but not fully.
I 100% Wonder and this video was my first time seeing that game's "Game Over" screen.
Mario 64's death animations are super creepy 😶😶😶😶😶😶😶
game overs for mario has implications, for example: bowser wins and the koopas take over the world! oh that would be such a good ending for us
Maybe Mario goes to the Underwhere because Donkey Kong Jr. is still canon.
Could you please do a video on the design of power ups.
i think it's an important distinction that game overs are when you lose all your lives, and just regular deaths aren't that. so like for sunshine and 3d world's double message the "too bad" is for death and game over is for losing all lives. games like odyssey and bananza that don't have lives won't have game over screens even if you lose a bunch of lives
love the TTYD sewer music during the video!
I got scared because why is this the voice of the Pichupedia channel ðŸ˜
bills can NOT be that high (joke)
8:28 BDG already told us, Mario is a war criminal.
Super Paper Mario also has my favorite 'bad ending' game over, where you have Mario respond to the introductory beginning-of-game 'will you help us' with a no and the game just ends minutes after you first get control
The OMG I yelled out seeing color splash's game over was so real😊
8:29 Pretty sure you can't use the Goombas and Koopas as a reasoning, because the ones Mario and Luigi kill work for Bowser.
"Well, everybody runs out of extra lives eventually, right?" – Luigi after realizing he is in hell in Super Paper Mario
DK64's Game Over is, by far, my favorite.
Worth noting is how unorthodox the way Mario & co. got sent to the Underwhere (and Overthere in Peach's case) was. Shaydes coming in only two possible variants point to them not retaining the appearance they had in the living world once they pass on, yet Mario and the others kept theirs, which moreso implies that even Dimentio couldn't exhaust all their lives immediately and just hid a teleport in his explosive boxes once they've fainted; teleporters to the equivalent of Hell, but teleporters nonetheless.
They sucked him dry
You Are Dead – Total Distortion
Very funny game over screen.
Bro teaches a class on Mario
When I was 5 years old, the Super Mario World Game Over screen and music used to mess me up so much, I cried everytime I saw and heard it. Something about seeing Mario/Luigi not moving on the map screen with a halo over their heads was disturbing.
My favorite Game Over examples are the dialogue ones in Super Paper Mario, one for telling Merlon that you refuse the call and another for agreeing to team up with Dimentio, who promptly betrays you.
I love the game over sequence from Donkey Kong 64. I've had K. Rool's laugh alongside the intensifying music engrained on my mind for years.
Small correction: Super Paper Mario never says that Mario, Luigi and Bowser belong in the Underwhere. They end up there, but it is then revealed that they never died, Dimention sent them there via portal. So this does not indicate where they would naturally go after game over.
Mario and Luigi Dream Team had a sequence where the Bros drink from a fountain, start tripping and having hallucinations that then end with a fake Game Over screen. That one is my absolute favourite 🙂
Game over, man! Game over!
6:39 That's actually NOT the game's beta game over screen. In fact, there is zero evidence that this was even supposed to be a game over screen to begin with, as it only appeared at the end of the E3 trailer but no footage of any demo ever featured it.
Though if anything, that only makes its presence in the trailer even creepier…
The game over of Luigi's Mansion was truly something for sure. Super Mario 64 one was also kind of cool.
Also, i wanna give out on a theory on Toad Town. I know you made a vid a long while ago about Toad Town inconsistency but i have the feeling that the town saw in Peach's Day Off in Mario Party Jamboree might actually be some really sneaky appeareance of Toad Town : structure is similar, is a town filled with lots of Toads and 0 Koopas, Yoshis or Goombas.
There's others towns in the game but it doesnt really fit in these so yeah, just saying.
Here’s a video idea, what if you explained why princess peaches castle is always changing in each Mario game series. But sometimes brings back elements from past games to the future ones. Yes I know it’s confirmed that she owns more then one. But I thought maybe you could go more into detail.
i like that one of Mario's taunts in smash bros ultimate is his game over pose
